The 7-Step Safety Checklist I Use for Panduit Installations and the PPE Most People Skip

When I first started managing safety procurement, I assumed a compliant safety program was just a matter of buying the right products. Then, in September 2021, I signed off on 320 arc flash labels generated from the wrong incident-energy study. Every label had the right bold “DANGER” header. None had the correct arc flash boundary. The reprint cost $890, and the delay made a maintenance shutdown late. Not a disaster, but enough to teach me: buying safety products is not the same as building a safety system.

That mistake is why this checklist exists. It is not a substitute for an engineer’s study or a lawyer’s review. It’s the everyday list I run through when setting up a site, ordering supplies, or onboarding a contractor. Seven steps, in order. If you are starting from scratch or just checking your blind spots, work through it top to bottom.

1. Verify the arc flash labeling data, not just the label condition

Arc flash labels get judged by their appearance: is the orange big enough? Is the warning clear? Those matter, but here’s the thing: the point of a label is the data. NFPA 70E (2024 edition) and IEEE 1584 are the documents engineers use to calculate incident energy. The label needs to match that calculation.

I’ve seen brand-new labels with no arc flash boundary and no PPE category. I’ve also seen labels with voltage only, which tells you almost nothing about arc flash severity. If you’re using a labeling system like Panduit’s, the software helps, but you still have to feed it correct data. When in doubt, ask for the incident-energy analysis. If nobody on your team can read it, hire someone who can.

One thing I stopped doing? Assuming “same specification” across vendors. Different suppliers interpret “arc flash label” differently. Verify the details on the proof against the engineering report, not against your memory.

2. Treat lockout/tagout as a procedure, not a product category

Lockout/tagout is a weird purchasing category because a box of circuit breaker lockouts and hasps looks like a complete solution. It isn’t. OSHA’s 29 CFR 1910.147 requires a written energy-control procedure for each energy-isolating point. If you don’t know every lockout point on every piece of equipment, you can’t choose the right devices.

Panduit’s circuit breaker lockouts are useful; they handle different breaker styles and make it easier to secure panel points. But the procedure comes first. In 2022, I saw a contractor grab a bundle of locks and start working on a machine with a stored-energy hazard. The equipment wasn’t isolated because nobody had identified the pneumatic accumulator as a separate energy source. A written procedure would have caught it. Check the procedure before you check the lockout kit.

3. Build cable assemblies on a harness board before installation

Every cable assembly deserves a staging area. For panel wiring and pre-fab harnesses, a Panduit harness board with pegs and cable guides helps you lay out each run, check the length, and verify routing before the bundle goes into the cabinet.

Does that sound like a step you can skip? That’s exactly what I thought until a $3,200 control panel order came back with one harness six inches too short. A $400 harness board would’ve caught it during the build. Now I have one in every workshop area.

4. Confirm your installers have real Panduit installer certification

If you’re using Panduit cable management, labeling, and containment systems, there’s a difference between “we know how to use cable ties” and “we’re Panduit certified installers.” The certification teaches the correct way to handle the system: bend radius, tension limits, label stock compatibility, and installation standards. It’s not marketing; it’s training.

When a contractor tells me they’re certified, I ask for the certificate and the scope. Some certifications cover specific product lines, not the whole catalog. If the job involves both cable support and industrial labeling, make sure the certification covers both. Granted, not every install needs it, but if you’re specifying Panduit, it’s worth checking. Budgeting for the training is cheaper than funding a rework. I’d rather spend 10 minutes explaining options than deal with mismatched expectations later.

5. Add metatarsal boots to your PPE matrix

Most PPE matrices list “safety toe footwear” and leave it at that. But metatarsal boots provide something extra: a guard that runs over the top of your foot, protecting the metatarsal bones that many toe-only boots leave exposed.

If your workers move heavy objects, stand on ladders, or work in tight spaces where things can drop onto the instep, the extra protection matters. Check that the footwear meets ASTM F2413-18 with metatarsal protection, usually marked MT. Don’t just buy “steel toe” and assume it covers the instep. I used to think that. Then a 20-pound box landed on a colleague’s foot—not his toes, his laces. He was fine, but the boot still sits in my office as a reminder.

6. Put the right fire extinguisher near the right hazard

Class K fire extinguishers are designed for commercial cooking oils and fats. If your site has a break room with a deep fryer, an employee kitchen, or a cafeteria, you need a Class K unit in that area. A general-purpose ABC extinguisher is not always enough for a grease fire.

That’s one of those facts I “knew” but didn’t act on until a small fryer fire in 2023. The ABC extinguisher cooled the flames, but the grease reignited twice. The Class K unit was down the hall. Now I use this rule: classify the hazard first, then choose the extinguisher. NFPA 10 covers placement and ratings, but the key is that Class K is a different animal. To be fair, ABC extinguishers work on many fires—just not all grease fires.

7. Add a pepper spray policy before you add pepper spray

What is pepper spray? It’s an aerosol defense product, usually containing oleoresin capsicum (OC), that causes temporary inflammation, tearing, and breathing difficulty. Some facilities keep it at security desks, in first aid kits, or in vehicles for employees working alone.

If you’re going to do that, write the policy first. Who is allowed to carry it? Where is it stored? When is it legally justified? Does the local jurisdiction restrict it? Just putting pepper spray in a drawer is a liability. Training matters. In 2024, I checked the “security supplies” list at a site and found an unlabeled can of OC in a cabinet. Nobody knew it was there, nobody had training, and nobody had considered the legal issues. That, more than the product itself, is the problem.

Common mistakes that still show up

  • Assuming “new label” means “correct label.” Verify against the incident-energy analysis.
  • Buying lockout/tagout kits before writing procedures. The kit is a consequence of the procedure, not the other way around.
  • Asking for Panduit installer certification but not checking the scope. Ask for the card. Check the product line.
  • Treating a harness board as a luxury. It’s a fixture, not an accessory.
  • Specifying safety toe boots when the hazard is the top of the foot. Add MT-rated metatarsal protection.
  • Putting a Class K extinguisher only in the kitchen, not near the fryer. And then not training people.
  • Rolling out pepper spray without a policy and training.

In the past 18 months, running this checklist has caught 47 potential issues—wrong labels, missing certifications, missed PPE ratings, and one pepper spray policy that didn’t exist. That’s 47 things that could have become incidents, notices, or reworks.

None of this is exciting. It’s the unglamorous part of a safety system that works. The next time someone says “we’re compliant,” ask them to prove it. Not because trust is bad, but because checked boxes are rarely the whole story.
