Panduit Industrial Safety: A Rush Order Checklist for Arc Flash Labels, Lockout/Tagout, and Sensors

If you're reading this, you're probably in one of two situations. You have a shutdown coming and just realized your arc flash labels are out of date. Or you're under a tight deadline and someone promised you a one-size-fits-all lockout solution that doesn't actually fit.

I'm not a sales rep. I coordinate rush orders between safety managers, distributors, and installers. In the last 5 years, I've processed 200+ rush orders for industrial safety products - including same-day turnarounds for electrical contractors and plant safety teams. This is the checklist I use when everything is urgent.

So, here's what I do, in order.

Step 1: Confirm the hazard, not just the product name

Start with the risk, not the brand. Panduit is a name you can trust for labels, lockout devices, and sensors, but the first question is always: what are you protecting people from?

If you need arc flash labels, you need to know the voltage level, the available fault current, the clearing time, and the boundaries. If you need lockout/tagout devices, you need to know every energy source: electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, thermal, chemical. If you're adding Panduit industrial sensors to monitor temperature or humidity inside a cabinet, you need to know what your threshold is and what action you'll take when it crosses.

And if you think a sewer gas detector will help with any of this, stop. A sewer gas detector is a real tool for a real hazard, but it's not an electrical safety product. Different risk. Different equipment. Don't mix them up because you're in a hurry.

Step 2: Verify every nameplate and spec before you order

The single biggest mistake I see is ordering labels before checking the actual equipment. I only believed this after ignoring it once and eating an $800 mistake. The client gave me a panel list from last year's audit. I didn't double-check. The labels came back with the wrong feeder numbers. We had to reprint, re-proof, and re-schedule - and the client paid rush fees for something that should have been routine.

According to NFPA 70E, an arc flash label has to include the nominal system voltage, the arc flash boundary, and enough information about incident energy or PPE category. So if you're ordering labels, those numbers have to come from the study, not from a guess.

So take photos. Write down the exact equipment ID, panel number, breaker number, voltage, and incident energy level. Send those to whoever is quoting you. If the current label is damaged, use that as a starting point, but verify the source. Do not guess. A wrong arc flash label is worse than no label because it gives people false confidence.

Step 3: Match the lockout device to the actual breaker

Circuit breaker lockouts are not one-size-fits-all. A Panduit breaker lockout works best when it matches the specific breaker style - whether it's a toggle handle, a rotary handle, or the newer square-style breakers. If the device doesn't lock securely, it's not a lockout device. It's a decoration.

And by the way: a tag is not a lock. It's a reminder. You still need a physical lockout device. I've seen facilities try to use a plastic zip tie or a 'danger' sticker. That's not lockout/tagout.

Here's one I never expected to see: a temporary fence for dogs being used as a barricade around an open panel. It didn't stop anyone because, well, it's a fence for dogs, not an electrical barrier. If you're under pressure, it's tempting to grab whatever is nearby. Please don't.

Step 4: Schedule a certified installer (or verify the one you already have)

Panduit's certified installer ecosystem is one reason brands get specified in the first place. But 'certified' has an expiration date. I've had clients say, 'We've used the same contractor for years.' That's fine, but is their current certificate active? Do they have proof of training? Does their work include a photo of the completed label application?

In March 2024, a client called 36 hours before a required audit. Their original installer had a lapse in certification. We found a local Panduit certified installer, cross-checked the labels, and got the install done. Missing that deadline would have triggered a $50,000 penalty clause. That's the difference between 'certified at some point' and 'certified right now.'

Step 5: Get one transparent, itemized quote

This is the part where I get a little fired up. I've learned to ask 'what's NOT included' before 'what's the price.' Because the vendor who lists all fees upfront - even if the total looks higher - usually costs less in the end.

So when you're getting a quote for Panduit products, ask for these in writing:
  • Product cost per item
  • Proofing and artwork fees for custom labels
  • Rush production fees (if any)
  • Freight and handling
  • Tax and any misc charges

If someone says 'just trust the final number,' that's a red flag. The sticker price at the beginning should be the same number at the end. If it's not, you're not buying a product. You're buying a surprise.

Step 6: Plan the install, restart, and verification

Lockout/tagout isn't just equipment. It's a sequence of actions. The OSHA standard (29 CFR 1910.147) is clear: you have to notify affected employees, shut down the equipment, isolate it from energy sources, apply the lockout device, and then verify that it's actually de-energized.

That sequence needs a schedule. When do you shut down? Who owns each lock? Who tests the equipment before it's released? What if another crew is still working on a different part of the building?

After the install, verify everything. Walk the floor with the checklist. Make sure the labels are legible and stuck on the right panels. Make sure the lockout devices actually lock. And if you've added Panduit industrial sensors, confirm they're reporting before you close the panel door. It's a lot harder to fix a sensor connection after you've energized a 480-volt line.

Common mistakes I see in every emergency

The pressure is always highest when the deadline is close. That's when the weird shortcuts show up.

I mentioned the temporary fence for dogs earlier. That's not a one-time oddity. It happens enough that I need to say it directly: a temporary fence for dogs is not a safety barrier. Not for people. Not for electrical panels. Not for open equipment.

Also, people ask me all the time: can you buy loop earplugs in store? Yes, you usually can. But if you're using them for work around generators, grinders, or compressors, check the NRR rating first. Hearing protection is not the same as noise-blocking. For industrial use, match the product to the decibel level and the exposure time.

And back to the sewer gas detector thing: if your facility actually needs one, do not buy a throwaway unit that looks like a keychain. Buy from a company that specializes in gas detection. The same logic applies to every safety product, including Panduit products. Buy the right tool, not the cheapest tool.

One more thing: this checklist is not a substitute for an arc flash study or a professional risk assessment. It's a coordination guide. It keeps the procurement process from becoming another hazard.

Bottom line: emergency doesn't mean disorder. Step by step, you can get the right labels, the right locks, the right sensors, and a certified installer in time - if you ask the right questions first.
