Safety Products Aren’t Commodities. The Industry Is Finally Catching Up.

I'm a quality and brand compliance manager for an industrial safety line. I review safety deliverables before they reach customers — roughly 200+ unique item specifications a year. I've rejected about 12% of first deliveries in the past 12 months, mostly for specification non-compliance. Not because my team likes being difficult, but because once a label or a lockout device goes into a facility, the margin for error is basically zero.

So when I say this, I mean it: the old way of buying safety products as commodity items is no longer acceptable. What was best practice in 2020 may not apply in 2025. The fundamentals haven't changed — warn people, lock out energy, prevent accidents — but the execution has transformed. And I'd argue that's a good thing.

From the Outside, Everything Looks the Same

From the outside, an arc flash label from one manufacturer looks about the same as from any other: orange background, black text, warning triangle, incident energy number. People assume they're interchangeable. And honestly, manufacturers don't do much to correct that impression.

The reality is different. What you don't see is what happens to those labels after they've been mounted in a hot, humid, dusty electrical room for a couple of years.

A few years back, I ran a comparison test — not a formal lab study, just a vendor evaluation. We took equivalent arc flash labels from five manufacturers and mounted them on test panels in an aggressive environment: humidity, cycling temperatures, some UV exposure. After eight months, the cheapest labels were visibly faded. One batch had adhesive failure at the corners. The barcodes were starting to delaminate, which would have been a problem for inspection tracking and inventory.

Safety products are only as good as their design and the system around them.

Certification Isn't a Badge. It's the Cause, Not the Effect.

Here's a misconception I keep running into: people think certified installers are a marketing thing. That Panduit certified contractors exist so the company can add an "ecosystem" to its brochure. I get why people think that — a lot of certification programs in other industries basically are that. Paperwork with no substance behind it.

But that has the causation backwards.

The reason Panduit runs a certified installer program isn't for a badge. It's because installation quality is the single largest variable in whether a safety labeling system actually works. A label is only as good as its placement. A lockout procedure is only as good as how well its tags and devices match real facility conditions.

In our Q1 2024 quality audit, we reviewed a facility that had recently put in a new electrical labeling system. On paper it looked fully compliant: right labels, right panels, right part numbers. In reality, the installation crew was untrained and uncoordinated. Labels were mounted at odd heights. Some were partially obscured by conduit. A couple were applied to surfaces that hadn't been cleaned, so they started peeling within six weeks. On paper: all good. In reality: a safety system that was failing.

Panduit certified installers go through formal training — not just product familiarization but placement guidelines, surface prep, environmental factors, and verification steps. That's the stuff that never makes it into a purchase order but makes the difference between a label that communicates for a decade and one that needs replacing in a year.

Plus, the certification creates a feedback loop. Trained installers see what works and what doesn't, and that knowledge feeds back into both the products and the training. The whole quality curve moves up. That's the kind of industry evolution I mean.

A "Hog Wire Fence" Story That Cost a Facility Its Audit

Here's a story that captures why this matters. A plant manager once asked me, completely seriously, whether the hog wire fence panels they'd set up around a transformer that was in for maintenance — actual 16-foot welded wire livestock panels, with a warning sign zip-tied to the mesh — would satisfy an OSHA inspector. The same panels you'd use for pigs, placed around a 13.8kV transformer.

I appreciate the creative thinking, but no.

From his perspective, it was a physical barrier. It was visible. It kept people out. And okay, that covers part of the equation. But a compliant safety barrier needs more: identification of the hazard type, the energy source, the lockout points, and contact info for the person authorized to remove the barrier. That's not just "put up a fence." That's a systems approach to safety.

And this is where Panduit products shine, in my opinion — not as individual items but as a coordinated system. Labels, lockout devices, documentation. It all has to work together.

Same goes for a seemingly simple task like knowing how to reset fire alarm systems — one of the most common maintenance searches there is. Most people think a reset is one step: press the button, alarm clears, done. But in industrial settings, it's tied to NFPA 72 procedures. The reset isn't just about clearing the signal. You have to verify the protected equipment is safe to operate, understand what triggered the alarm in the first place, and document the inspection. A breaker lockout on the fire alarm panel, a clear label with the shutdown/reset procedure, and a trained person responsible for that action — that's a system working as designed.

To Be Fair, the Old Way Served Its Time

To be fair, I understand why the commodity mindset is hard to shake. Budgets are real. Safety spending feels like a cost center, and buying the cheapest compliant label or the simplest lockout device seems like reasonable risk mitigation.

I'd argue that calculation has shifted. A single audit finding — one label non-conformance, one improperly documented lockout point — cost a facility $22,000 in rework and a delayed launch. That's a real number from a real project I was involved in. A premium you'd pay for a coordinated system, with verified materials and certified installers, is trivial by comparison.

Granted, this approach requires more upfront planning. You can't just order labels online, stick them on, and call it done. But the extra effort is frontloaded — it happens at the specification stage, not during the panic before an audit.

Bottom line: The industry has evolved, and Panduit's integrated approach — products, certification, training, compliance — is where that evolution is headed. Not because it's fashionable, but because it works. If your safety procurement is still a shopping list of individual commodity items, the industry has passed you by. I'd rather see you and your people on the right side of that shift.
